There’s a very particular art to getting dressed when you’re a mum on the run. You need an outfit that can handle the school gates, a coffee meeting, a supermarket sweep and whatever else the day throws at you, preferably without requiring more than five minutes of thought in the morning.
My answer? Great denim, layers of beautifully made basics and a couple of clever accessories that make the whole thing look far more considered than it actually was.
This is my current formula for effortless everyday dressing. Comfortable enough for running around, polished enough for everything afterwards, and made up of pieces you’ll reach for again and again.
Why It Works
Nothing here is trying too hard, and that’s precisely the point. The barrel jeans give the outfit shape, the tee keeps things relaxed, beautiful cashmere elevates the basics, ballet flats mean you can actually move, and gold earrings provide the finishing touch.
It’s essentially five very good versions of things you probably already wear.
And for me, that’s the secret to mum-on-the-run dressing: less time deciding what to wear, more chance of leaving the house looking like you had all the time in the world.
The ballet flat continues its takeover, and I’m very happy about it.
Mango’s suede version feels a little more grown-up thanks to the buckle detail and beautifully simple round-toe shape. More importantly, they’re flat. Because however lovely an outfit looks, nobody needs to be navigating the school run in a shoe they can’t actually run in.
The suede also adds some texture against denim and cashmere, making the whole outfit feel that little bit more luxurious.
If you haven’t yet succumbed to the barrel jean, now might be the time. This light indigo pair from M&S gives you that relaxed, slightly oversized shape without venturing into full fashion-victim territory.
The mid-rise waist makes them wonderfully wearable, while the volume through the leg gives a simple T-shirt-and-jeans combination an instant update. They’re exactly what I want from everyday denim: comfortable enough for charging around but with enough shape to make it look like I’ve actually thought about my outfit.
Yes, it’s an investment, but a really good cashmere jumper earns its keep.

Wear it properly when the temperature drops or sling it around your shoulders over a tee when the weather can’t quite make its mind up. Either way, it instantly makes denim feel more polished.
Never underestimate the importance of the perfect white-ish T-shirt. This one from We The Free has that elusive already-worn-in quality, with washed cotton jersey, relaxed sleeves and a slightly shrunken, semi-cropped fit.
It works particularly well with a mid-rise jean because you get shape without having to tuck half a metre of T-shirt into your waistband. Wear it alone, layer it under the COS cashmere, add jewellery and you’re done.
A deceptively simple wardrobe workhorse.
This is the piece that pulls the whole look together. Dragon Diffusion’s Santa Croce basket bag is handwoven from leather in a rich dark brown that works beautifully with light denim, ivory and cashmere.
It has that lovely slouchy, understated feel that makes an outfit look expensive without screaming about it. And, crucially for a mum-on-the-run bag, it’s actually big enough to carry your life around in.

Every mum-on-the-run outfit needs sunglasses. Partly because they finish the look, partly because nobody needs to know what time you actually went to bed.
This retro brown pair from Bershka punches well above its £15.99 price tag. The slim arms, brow-bar detail and tinted lenses bring just enough Seventies energy, while the warm brown works perfectly with the Dragon Diffusion bag and suede ballet flats.
And this is where mixing high and low really works. Wear £16 sunglasses with beautiful cashmere and a great leather bag and suddenly they look considerably more expensive than they are.
Throw them on for the school run, add the gold hoops and you’re instantly more pulled together, even if the morning itself was anything but.
And finally, the quickest trick in the book: add a great pair of gold hoops.
